If you live in a house, look at the house from the point of view of rain runoff. Where does the water go? Most people don’t know what happens to rainwater after it comes off the roof or out of the gutters. Whatever water is running off the land is going into a body of water, either aboveground or underground. If you find places the water runoff gets blocked, it’s a healing act to remove the blockage. Sometimes a small change, like building up a slope on the land, can act as a way to trap water that is then used for gardening. Another way to help the flow is to put in small filters to trap garbage and keep it from getting into a stream or river. Always think small before you begin to think bigger. Often it’s the little things that help in the immediate situation.

If you live in a dry or desert area, like Texas, the ground is hard and the rain runs right off, never penetrating the Earth. When strong storms occur, all the rainwater is quickly channeled into dry streambeds, and flash floods can occur. To capture the rainwater where the ground is hard, punch holes in the ground about four to six inches deep. Use either a grid pattern or a pattern that is created by the lay of the land itself. These holes will allow the rain to penetrate into the ground, rejuvenating the land.

Water conservation is a given when the goal is to preserve potable water. A leaky faucet just dripping for a year can waste over three thousand gallons of water, so fixing water leaks and running toilets is a vital conservation action. Taking shorter showers has a positive long-term effect. If you turn off the water while soaping the dishes when cleaning up after a meal, then rinse off the dishes all together, you dramatically cut down the amount of water used. Any way you can stop the waste of water makes a positive impact toward preserving this life-giving resource.

Grandfather always approached water with reverence and appreciation and in a sacred manner. He saw Earth Mother’s blood enriching each living entity and honored her with each step he took. Deepening your connection and appreciation for water builds greater sensitivity within you. Actions you take to preserve and protect water sources then come from your heart and feel effortless because those actions produce positive results.

Clean water is one the most important resources provided by the Earth. All life depends on water for survival. Anything a person can do to protect this crucial resource makes a positive step as a caretaker and healer, be it limiting water usage, cleaning clogged streams or plantings on riverbanks to limit erosion; each act is beneficial. Remember, even the simplest act of taking a piece of garbage out of a stream or off its banks makes a difference. It is an affirmation of caring.
